A man of wealth and distincttion, Francis Bennett Goldney became the honorary director and curator of Canterbury Royal Museum in 1898. Politically ambitious, he became Mayor of Canterbury in 1905, and MP in 1910. In 1907 he was also appointed Athlone Pursuivant to the Office of Arms in Dublin. It was here that the Irish Crown Jewels were kept but five months later they went missing. Of course it was nothing to do with him....
