Looking around Cardiff's Dockland today, it is hard to believe that this was once the greatest coal exporting port in the world. In 1913 coal shipments peaked at a never to be repeated 10.5 million tons. One of the biggest fleets locally owned was that of William James Tatem who operated 19 ships with a total gross tonnage of 81.467.
