The Morel brothers of Jersey arrived in Cardiff in 1861. They married two Gibbs sisters from Portland Dorset and with their brother in law, John Angel Gibbs established a shipbroking and shipowning business in Cardiff. The enterprise succeeded to such an extent that the East Dock was known as the 'Morel Dock' and anything up to 30 ships owned by them could be loading at the same time.
